As they usualy say, RTFM...
To select polygons based on surface names, you just have to :
.be on 'Polygon' select mode
.choose 'Statistics' (press 'w')
.select the surface name you want
.press the '+' sign
The polygons that form that surface will be selected.
The '-' sign is to deselect polygons (in case you select ALL and want to
have ALL minus 'something')
